Fluttering Fantasies Shaker Card

I recently saw a video with Jennifer McGuire where she made a shaker card with Altenew's new Creative Cuts: Fluttering Fantasies set, and I decided I would try something similar. My card is larger than hers because I didn't want to trim any of my pretty watercolored panel down, but I used her idea to create a frame around the panel and then make it a shaker card.

For the coral panel on the front of the card, I started by using Altenew's Coral Red gouache from their Strolling Through New York Artists' Gouache set. Once it was dry, I die cut it using the Zero Waste die from Fluttering Fantasies die set. I then trimmed a piece of holographic paper to create a frame for the panel and added acetate to the back of the die cut panel.

For the inside panel of my shaker card, I watercolored another panel using Altenew's Lagoon gouache from their Strolling Through New York Artists' Gouache set. I had some extra watercolor paper after trimming the panel for the card, so I die cut the same Fluttering Fantasies Zero Waste die out of the Lagoon watercolor paper to have additional butterfly die cut to decorate the front of the card.

I added beads in pink, teal, white, and translucent colors and various sizes on top of the Lagoon panel and then added the front of the shaker card using Altenew's 1/4 inch width 1/8 inch thick instant dimension foam tape to adhere them together.

To finish the card, I die cut a circle out of vellum using a retired Altenew set (you can now purchase their Nesting Circles set if you are looking for a set of circle dies). I die cut the butterflies again using vellum and layered up a couple of the larger butterflies using the holographic paper I made the frame out of to die cut the butterfly bodies and add them to the larger 2 butterflies. I recently purchased Altenew's acrylic markers, so I grabbed the coordinating colors of acrylic markers and added some markings to decorate the butterflies. This idea also came from Jennifer McGuire's video.

I then die cut the "hi" sentiment and its shadow using Altenew's Timeless Sentiments 2 die set. I added it to the vellum circle using more instant dimension foam tape. Then I added Bearly Arts liquid glue to the back of the vellum circle where I had my die cuts and adhered the circle to the center of the card.

If you're interested in doing some crafty shopping at Altenew, I'd be so grateful if you used my affiliate link here: Carrie's Altenew Link.  I receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Altenew carries many wonderful layering die sets like the one I used here.

  1. This is a wonderful technique, and I don't make shakers near as much as I should, so I may have to CASE this design. Thanks for joining in and sharing at The Inspiration Station Challenge. We enjoy seeing all the creativity that's shared with us.
